Welcome to Year 5. We have three classes in this year group.
The Year 5 staff team are: Yatin Solanki (lead), Christian Rankin/Ellie Light, Laurence Wolohan.
Term 1- Beast Creator
This half term, we’ll handle a range of minibeasts and small creatures. We will understand how minibeasts move, what they eat and where they live.
We’ll write minibeast reports and comic strips, create our own Super Beasts and Hero Beasts in English. In science, we’ll learn how to categorise minibeasts. We’ll make detailed drawings of our minibeasts in art, present data about them and make maps to show the route of our minibeast hunt. With our DT heads on we’ll create ‘minibeast hotels’ and write adverts to attract minibeasts to stay in them. We’ll learn about miniature deadly creatures and use interesting vocabulary to write minibeast poems.
Term 2- Stargazers
Wonderdome will kick off our new topic where we will learn all about the Solar System and the Sun, using mnemonics to help us remember the facts. We’ll investigate a Solar System and the cycle of day into night. We’ll learn about Galileo and Newton the Kings of modern astronomy.
Becoming planets ourselves, we’ll use movement to demonstrate the motions of the Solar System. Our English will have a focus on the Star Wars movies.
Term 3- Pharaohs
We are going to learn about the morbid, yet fascinating, process of mummification. Following Howard Carter’s famous discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb we will become report writers. We’ll also consider whether it was right to open Tutankhamun’s tomb, or whether it should have been left as it was. Our work will inspire us to write some exciting Egyptian mystery stories. We’ll draw Egyptian artefacts in detail, focusing on symbols and design features. Studying historical sources will help us learn more about the Pharaohs, the Egyptian gods and ancient religious beliefs. We might even learn to spell Pharaohs.
Term 4 - Time Traveller
Let us meet people from different generations to find out what life was like in the past and we’ll predict how things might change in the future. Using portraits from the past for inspiration, we’ll write character descriptions about the people in them. Timelines will be created. In art, we’ll be able to create our own Andy Warhol style prints and experiment to see how pictures can be changed and enhanced. We’ll write adventure stories about the fascinating subject of time travel.
Term 5 -Peasants and princes
At the start of this half term, we’ll meet a very odd character and use a range of source materials to research the symptoms of the Black Death. Our geography skills will help us understand how the black death came to Britain and why it spread so quickly. We’ll find out about disgusting and dangerous plague ‘cures’ using Horrible Histories as inspiration. Our personal plague journals will record the horror of the black death and we’ll write poetry inspired by Chaucer. We’ll learn about different social classes, understand the reasons for the Peasants’ Revolt and take part in a battle to learn what it was like to be a knight.
Term 6- Scream machine
Stories and poems will capture the excitement of riding a roller coaster! Forces and materials will be covered in science. After carrying out fair tests to investigate the materials used to make roller coasters, we’ll create prototype rides of our own. In our computing work, we’ll upload photographs of rides and examine online theme park maps. Then, we’ll use advanced techniques and commands to search for information on the internet
